The pepper in Brazil
Pepper, Piper nigrum, is a plant of the Piperaceae family, native to the south of India.
The pepper arrived in Brazil (Bahia) in the 17th century. However it is only in the Thirties that Japanese immigrants introduced a variety closer to the pepper consumed today.

There are three main producing regions:

  • The Para, on average 30.000 tons, mainly in the regions of Castanhal, Volume-Açu, Guama and Paragominas.
  • Espirito Santo, on average 8.000 tons, mainly in the area of São Mateus.
  • Bahia, 3.000 tons, primarily in the south of the State.
Pepper growing is mainly a family activity bringing resources to approximately 150.000 people.
The harvest generally starts in August in the Para and in July in Espirito Santo. It ends in October.
This spice is dried artificially with the help of mechanical dryers. The plant suffers from a disease, fusarium, which lowers its life expectancy and makes more difficult its economic profitability.

Vitaspice works in partnership with the best suppliers of Bahia and Espirito Santo.

The world pepper market
Vietnam has entered in the international pepper market in the Nineties. For ten years, it has been the first producer with more than 30% of the world total. India is in second position followed by Brazil with nearly 15% of the worldwide production.

The first exporter is by far Vietnam. After a leadership in the early 90’s, Brazil occupies today the second place. However the quality of the Brazilian pepper remains higher than that of its Asian competitor.
The world pepper trade represents more than 800 millions USD/year, that is to say 20% of all spices. With approximately 60.000 tons, the United States import nearly 30% of the pepper sold on the international markets. Germany is the second world importer with 25.000 tons/year.

There are numerous pepper grades in the world, which explains the variability of prices between origins. However average prices are strongly cyclical. At the beginning of the years 2000, huge quantities of pepper available on the market depressed the prices. Since 2006, with the stagnation in Vietnam and the fall of the production in Indonesia, the prices are on the rise.
