Cocoa in Brazil
The cocoa tree, Theobroma cacao, is a plant of the Sterculiaceae family, native to the Amazon basin.
Some forastero varieties have been introduced to Bahia in the 18th century.

Today, four regions are the source of the Brazilian cocoa (170.000 tons on average):

  • The Para, 35.000 tons, with a good share coming from the region of Medicilândia.
  • Rondônia, 15.000 tons.
  • Espirito Santo, 10.000 tons, mainly in the region of Linhares.
  • Bahia, 110.000 tons, in the municipalities located in the south of Salvador.
Cocoa growing involves 500.000 people in Brazil. The activity is based on family and hired labour. Some farms, with more than 1.000 ha, are key market participants.
The cocoa is harvest all the year with however smaller quantities from January to April. Cocoa beans are dried either with the sun, or artificially. The practice of fermentation is less and less widespread, urging the need to know each micro region, each farm in order to select and buy the best cocoa.
The Brazilian cocoa has suffered from a disease, the witches' broom, which has decreased the production by more than 50% compared to the 80’s.

Vitaspice is working directly with producers and first class grinders and has an in-depth expertise in cocoa business.

The Vitaspice offer
Vitaspice buys its cocoa in Bahia and Espirito Santo.

For the Brazilian market we propose a traditional cocoa with a low level of moisture and impurities.

To our national and international customers who wish to meet the new consumer’s needs, we can provide a high quality cocoa premium selected in the best farms of Bahia, at the heart of the traditional cocoa regions of Brazil.
The world cocoa market
The Ivory Coast is the first cocoa producing country since the beginning of the Eighties with more than 35% of the world total. Ghana is in second position. The fine cocoa production accounts for only 1% of the world cocoa output and remains localised in South America.

The world cocoa beans market represents approximately 9 billion USD. The European and North-American markets still concentrate more than 80% of the world demand for cocoa and its by-products.
40% of cocoa is ground in the producing countries: this percentage increases regularly each year. Although threatened, the Netherlands keeps a leadership position.

For few years the world cocoa production has stagnated in spite of the growing chocolate consumption. The Ivory Coast does not manage to exceed the 1,4 million tons and Ghana, after large progress, seems to strongly slow down. The current results in Indonesia are below official expectations. It is likely that the world continues to lack cocoa during the next years and thus that the prices remain at high levels.
